This is one of a dozen dresses from a single owner collection of beautiful 1930s dresses and I am very pleased to have this small capsule for you. Her collection was lovingly sourced over decades and she has decided that it is time let them back out into the world for others to enjoy. Outstanding designs from this era are increasingly hard to find. Her collection represents some of the best of the era that I have seen in a very long time. Most are in excellent condition and the few included in the capsule that do have some flaws are such outstanding designs that I feel there is still room for someone to love them and wear them as they are, or perhaps to put in the additional work to repair them. This is just a tiny sampling of her overall collection and I hope to have another series of these capsules in the future. Enjoy this first drop.
The fabric on this dress is a an early and original moss crepe that most people now associate with the 1970s. It is incredible to see this early example of it. The dress is gorgeous in person. It is also surprisingly avant garde in its design for a piece from this time period. The dress falls in a V at the front with a little inset of silk chiffon to act as a modesty panel to the deeper plunge. The bodice is sleeveless and the straps curve up and stay close to the neck. They are twisted for detailing. It skims over the breast and meets an elaborate hand beaded panel there. The bead work combines tiny black glass tube beads with blue tinged large sequins. They are all applied one by one by hand. It's quite incredible. The skirt falls to the floor under that and is made from several yards of the crepe. It is extensively draped down both sides and these draped panels fall from a smooth center panel on both the back and the front. When you stand still it falls in a smoother column but when you move you see just how much volume is there. The back just makes it even better. It has a racer back created from that middle panel. It is truly gorgeous and if you are a fan of these pieces from the late twenties and into the thirties you know just how exceptional and rare it is. This one will be better in person as the shape needs a body to really bring it to life. Excellent condition with a minor note below.
Unlined and slips on with no closures. Hand finished throughout. Three sequins are missing on the front design. It is in wonderful condition and appears to heave been worn very little. For a garment almost 100 years old it is truly amazing. The bias cut should allow it to fit a range of sizes.
